When you hear Black Pearl, it’s easy for your imagination to run wild: from the infamous treasure-seeking ship in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies to rare jewels that widen the eyes of all that see them. And so it goes with the Black Pearl pepper. It’s a jewel. This is a stunning edible ornamental pepper plant – seriously one of the most beautiful plants of any kind on the planet – and its chilies contain a surprising pop of heat.
Scoville heat units (SHU): 10,000 – 30,000 SHU
Median heat: 20,000 SHU
Suggestions: Peppers need a warm soil and night temperature to prosper. They will stunt under 10C. Location should be sheltered from the wind and soil should be kept reasonably moist. Be sure to harden off the seedlings to reduce transplant stress. Harvest fruit early and often. The more you pick the more they will produce. Do not pull off fruit, rather cut from stems.
Pot size: Minimum 12″ per plant or plant in ground 12″ away from next plant.
